JGR and Raybestos Brakes Claim First, Second and Sixth Place Finishes

The JGR team capped off an auspicious week with an amazing win at Saturday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Kyle Busch took sixth, Denny Hamlin took second and Matt Kenseth drove his No. 20 Dollar General Toyota to victory lane… all three cars relying on the stopping power of Raybestos brakes.

Kenseth, earned his first victory at Darlington, his third of the season and the 27th of his career. Substitute crew chief Wally Brown said, “The strength of Matt’s car was unbeatable in the closing laps. This was a team effort… a talented driver, dedicated team a powerful car and an equally powerful brake package all added up to a well-earned win.”

Kenseth took the lead from JGR teammate Kyle Busch on Lap 355 of 367 and pulled away to win by 3.155 seconds over Hamlin, as Busch moved into sixth. This was Hamlin’s first full race back from a compression fracture, sustained during a last-lap crash at Fontana, Calif., in late March. Given the strain of this demanding track, his effort was an inspiration to his entire team.

The Raybestos Racing brake package, used by NASCAR® teams like Joe Gibbs Racing, combines ample stopping power with a considerable weight savings advantage on tracks like the Darlington 1.37-mile Super Speedway.

Raybestos racing brake pads are the ultimate high-friction, high-torque racing pads. The famous Raybestos “ST” series racing compounds provide superior stopping power for championship-caliber race teams.

Raybestos Racing calipers make up the strongest and lightest caliper package currently available in all of NASCAR. They have an optimized structure caliper architecture design and a mono-block aluminum alloy construction. They also include integral crossover cooling and progressively sized titanium pistons.

Raybestos Racing two-piece rotors are engineered to withstand the high-heat torture of short tracks and road courses; delivering the effective lightweight operation required for qualifying and superspeedway runs. Winning features include an S-groove slot design, a racing-specific vane configuration and optimized metallurgy.

For reliable performance, all Joe Gibbs Sprint Cup racecars are also equipped with Raybestos Racing ball joints and tie rods. The premium-quality chassis parts help fine-tune each car’s suspension setup for optimal grip and handling.

The lessons learned on tracks like Darlington are continually translated into product improvements across the entire Raybestos product line, which includes racing, street performance, police patrol/pursuit vehicles and heavy-duty trucks.

Under the stopping power of Raybestos brakes, Busch drove his No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota to victory lane; beating out Martin Truex Jr. by just .508 seconds.

Raybestos brakes have won four of seven Sprint Cup races in 2013 (Phoenix – Edwards, Las Vegas – Kenseth, California and Texas – Busch).

“Kyle was so fast all day, and he really drove his butt off at the end,” said Dave Rogers, Crew Chief of Busch’s No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota. “Kyle was running up front all day long, and when he grabbed the top spot after the final restart, we knew he was going to bring it home.” Busch led for a race-high 171 laps.

Also running the Raybestos brakes intermediate racing package were Roush Fenway drivers Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle. They secured third and fourth-place finishes, respectively, in Saturday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway. “We had great pits stops all night,” said Edwards. “This was just a great event. I wish we were over there celebrating in victory lane, but we’ll get there.”

The Raybestos® Advanced Certified Education™ (ACE) program increases educational opportunities for technicians and service writers who sell Raybestos chassis product. The e-training module offered by Affinia Tech Training presents the ideal customer service engagement when assessing chassis repairs and addressing customer concerns.

The e-training modules offer technicians time-saving and money-saving benefits:

• Identify and resolve undercar problems more effectively
• Make it easier to present and sell appropriate parts and service
• Learn key advantages of Professional Grade® products
• Reduce comebacks for work that doesn’t meet customer expectations
• Increase loyalty with existing customers and grow business with new customers

The training module takes approximately 25 minutes to complete and is followed by a brief quiz to ensure the technician has mastered the concepts taught during the training. The module begins by addressing appropriate customer interaction at the beginning of the repair cycle. They move through each step of the entire repair phase, which includes discovery, verification, inspection, recommendation, repair… and finally the test drive and delivery of the completed work. As an added benefit, technicians can return and review the training materials at any time.

At any time during the training module, technicians can click on the ACE tips for additional information and valuable advice to make the brake work more effective and complete. Chassis system overview buttons allow techs to review the functionality of the items that make up a chassis system.

First Victory with Joe Gibbs Racing… One of Many Using Raybestos Brakes

Matt Kenseth held off Kasey Kahne during their final duel to earn a hard fought best birthday gift. Under the stopping power of Raybestos brakes, Kenseth drove his No. 20 Dollar General Toyota to victory lane at Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This victory marked Toyota’s 50th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win and JGR’s 101st.

Kenseth started in the 18th position but made his way into the top ten, driving his way to eighth by lap 20. Kenseth battled loose conditions but managed to remain inside the top ten through much of the race’s first half… working his way into sixth on lap 140. He restarted fourth with just over 100 laps remaining and then settled into the fifth position on the next green flag run.

A caution on lap 195 brought Kenseth down pit road, and crew chief Jason Ratcliff would call for a two-tire change. He lined up fifth for the restart on lap 200 and he soon climbed into third. With just over 40 laps remaining, he made the call for fuel only during the caution… allowing him to restart first on lap 230. He took the lead on the restart and held off a hard charging Kahne during the final 20 laps to get the win.

Teammate Kyle Busch (who also ran the Raybestos brake package) had one of the fastest cars on the track. He lead several times and earned a fourth-place finish.

“The Raybestos brakes performed well for both Matt and Kyle all race long,” said Jason Ratcliff, Crew Chief of Kenseth’s No. 20 Dollar General Toyota. “The Raybestos package has been a winner for us over the past few seasons, and the JGR team is looking forward to another victory next week at Bristol.”

The Raybestos Racing brake package, used by NASCAR® teams like Joe Gibbs Racing, combines ample stopping power with a considerable weight savings advantage on tracks like the Las Vegas 1.5-mile Super Speedway.

The lessons learned on tracks like Las Vegas are continually translated into product improvements across the entire Raybestos product line, which includes racing, street performance, police patrol/pursuit vehicles and heavy-duty trucks.

For more information on the Raybestos Sprint Cup braking system, or for questions on any Raybestos brand brakes, visit www.RaybestosBrakes.com or call 800-323-0354.

Friction Manufacturer Explains Its Phased Approach to Reducing Copper and Other Chemical Constituents in Its Formulations

To comply with new laws in Washington and California, the Brake Manufacturers Council (BMC) developed an industry-wide, self-certification program. The Brake Friction Materials Self Certification Compliance Program confirms that friction material suppliers comply with the applicable legislation, regulations and requirements in those states in a phased approach.

Terry Heffelfinger, Vice President, Product Development, R&D, and Quality, Brake Parts Inc, said, “As part of the BMC, the Brake Pad Partnership and the Better Brakes Working Group… Brake Parts Inc LLC has been actively engaged for more than 10 years to implement the Better Brake Rule.

The Washington Better Brakes Law requires a phase-out of copper and other chemical constituents from brake friction materials sold or offered for sale in that state. For nearly two years, the Dept. of Ecology has been engaged in a consensus-based process to develop rules to implement the Better Brakes Law.

BPI worked in collaboration with stakeholders that represented interests in Washington State and around the globe. They included the Washington Dept. of Ecology, brake and motor vehicle manufacturers, water quality interests, wholesalers, distributors, retailers and installers of brakes. BPI is pleased to announce the adoption of the Better Brakes Rule.

As a part of the BMC, Brake Parts Inc has taken its first step and is fully compliant with Phase 1 of the certification program. As required by law, BPI provided baseline data to NSF International (an independent third party industry-sponsored registrar) before the deadline of January 1, 2013. Then, NSF Int’l provided the data to the WA Dept. of Ecology, in compliance with the Washington Better Brake Rule.

Phase 2 of the new law limits heavy metals such as Cadmium, Chromium, Mercury, Lead and Asbestiform fibers when tested to SAE J2975 by an independent third party lab. This happens in 2014 for California, and in 2015 for Washington. The new laws further limit copper to less than 5% by weight in Phase 3 on or after January 1, 2021. On January 1, 2025, California will limit copper to 0.5% by weight in Phase 4. That same requirement becomes effective in Washington on January 1, 2032 unless an advisory committee determines that alternatives brake friction materials are available.

Heffelfinger said, “All BPI brake friction materials will be tested and certified compliant by NSF International, which serves as the industry-sponsored registrar for the BMC.” By doing so, BPI will meet the second phase of the legislation, which takes effect January 1, 2014.

Each brake friction formulation or material that is tested and found compliant will be given an edge code per SAE J866. In addition to the edge code marking, product packaging will be labeled with a “LeafMark” to show its level of environmental regulatory compliance.

Heffelfinger said, “Many people don’t realize that these laws eventually target professional technicians.” He said they could be fined $10,000 per violation if a non-compliant brake pad is installed. “For more than a century, the Raybestos brand has stood for safety.” He said the quest for safety now translates into protecting the environment… and protecting the reputations of the installers who sell Raybestos brakes in good faith.

According to the state of Washington, the copper released from brake pads can affect sensitive species of algae (phytoplankton) that form the base of the aquatic food chain. Copper also directly damages the sensory capabilities of salmon, making it difficult for them to avoid predators or find their way back to their spawning grounds.

Friction manufacturers use copper in their formulations for faster curing and better heat dissipation. But as the industry learns more about copper’s effect on the environment, BPI is exploring alternatives to copper. Those safer alternatives include fiberglass, Aramid and Kevlar fibers. As BPI fine-tunes its formulas to meet new environmental challenges, Heffelfinger said his company remains committed to meeting customer expectations for performance, wear and smooth, quiet braking.

Heffelfinger said, “Brake Parts Inc LLC is actively engaged at our R&D Center in Winchester, Kentucky developing the next generation of low copper or no copper friction materials to meet the Legislation in Washington and California. We already have a no copper formula in production and our semi-metallic brake pads already meet the requirements for 2025.”

Copper can also be released from other non-brake-pad sources, which include: architectural copper, pesticides, agricultural land applications, pool, spa, and fountain algaecide treatments, pressure-treated wood preservatives, marine antifouling paint, fertilizers, industrial facilities and domestic water discharged to storm drains.

California and Washington are the first states to pass specific laws regulating copper and other substances in brake pads. However, Hawaii, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and other countries are considering similar laws.
